The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
