A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.
