Anticipated Incarceration

The adjudicated coup-monger – who has been subject to house arrest in his mansion while a series of legal procedures and petitions play out – is widely expected to be jailed in the coming days, amidst increasing rumors that he will be moved to a infamous maximum security prison.

Historical Comments on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the right-wing former military man displayed minimal compassion for the country's inmates.

“For what reason must we offer those lowlifes a good life?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be screwed, period. That's my view.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to wind up there, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Location Debate

But the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, four of whom this week inspected the prison in an seeming bid to discourage the high court from banishing him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, said he expected the 70-year-old figure to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal problems – the result of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 presidential campaign – implied it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His health is highly critical. He won’t be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It would be awful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the quality of inmate food.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells containing forty prisoners: “That’s practically one square metre per detainee.

“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the horrible meals,” remarked the senator.

Supporters React

Lucas is not the lone figure expressing views ahead of the one-time head of state's expected incarceration.

Writing in a prominent newspaper, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” public service and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the biggest unfairness in its history”.

“It is an injustice that gnaws the hearts of many Brazilian citizens,” he stated.

Divided Public Reaction

It is possibly true due to the significant following Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. But his expected jailing has also pleased the spirits of millions individuals who think he ought to be jailed for planning to prevent the incoming president from taking power – and even plotting to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a representative for the incumbent leader's Workers’ party, commented: “No one wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to get dignified treatment – but proper care in prison. He must not carry on being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years celebrating the severe conditions of inmates, had unexpectedly become aware to their privileges. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently argued that basic rights should not be for offenders – opted to visit a penitentiary to learn what situations are really like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, demeaning conduct”.

Potential Jail Environment

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about 14,000 prisoners, his expected assigned facility appears to be a close penitentiary for law enforcement and other “special” prisoners called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

The accommodations are considerably more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although still a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the spectacular leader's home, about a short distance away.

According to information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – roughly the area of two parking spaces – and features a 12 square meter WC with a water facility and a 12 sq metre terrace. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a set and additionally a cooler in his cell as long as they were donated by his family,” the report stated.
