Nutrition Assistance Scheduled to End for 41 Million Amid Ongoing Federal Shutdown
The United States Department of Agriculture stated on Saturday that SNAP funds under one of the country’s largest welfare initiatives won't be issued during the coming month due to the ongoing government funding lapse.
Closure Continues Through Its Third Week
The federal closure had reached three and a half weeks when the announcement was made, coming after appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives asking the department to tap into reserve accounts to pay for next month's benefits.
“The reality is, funds are depleted,” the department confirmed. “Now, no payments will be distributed” beginning in November.
Widespread Impact
Tens of millions of people depend on these monthly payments, according to official statistics. Some regions, such as one southwestern state, reliance on this assistance is as high as 21% of residents.
A memo obtained by journalists indicated that the department would not access contingency funding to cover next month's assistance.
Legislative Deadlock
Lawmakers from both parties remain deadlocked over how to support and resume the federal government.
Remarks from the head of a budget research center noted that the White House had chances to act sooner to avoid interruption in payments.
“They had the ability and responsibility made moves weeks ago to get ready to access these resources,” the remarks concluded. “Instead, they might decide against it for potential political benefit” while GOP lawmakers attempt to influence Democratic senators to support a funding package that would resume government operations.
States Prepare
State leaders from multiple regions activated emergency protocols recently to free up resources to combat potential hunger preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping in November.
