Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
