Jurgen Klopp states a return to lead Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who departed from Anfield in 2024, remarked that rejoining the club remains something that could happen. The 58-year-old, following a hugely successful near-decade reign which brought Champions League success and ending the club's long wait in 30 years, currently occupies roles overseeing worldwide football with the Red Bull group and providing guidance with the German Football League.
Fan Sentiment and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the Premier League in the previous campaign, but many fans holding him in high esteem would welcome the idea of his potential comeback. In a wide-ranging interview, he shared with Steven Bartlett: “I said I won't manage any other side on English soil. So that means in case it's my former club...yeah. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“At 58 years old, so I could make the decision down the line, it's uncertain. Is a decision required immediately? If so, I wouldn't return. But thank God, I don’t have to do that. I'll wait and observe how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
When asked about what circumstances would need to occur to tempt his return to management, he revealed he was not instantly drawn for a comeback. “I'm not entirely sure, I love what I do right now,” he said. “I don’t miss coaching; I avoid standing during downpours for two-and-a-half or three hours; I don’t miss going to press conferences repeatedly each week or doing numerous chats weekly.
“I don’t miss the dressing room as a dressing room, but sitting in a restaurant with the team enjoying conversation, is pleasant. We won a lot of games so there was often positive atmosphere in the building. Remaining with me is Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh in my ear to illustrate.”
Commending Arne Slot
He commended regarding Arne Slot, praising him for the adjustments that won the league in the previous season. Liverpool have lost four consecutive matches in all competitions following significant transfers, yet he dismissed the idea it could be a decline.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward in Flo[rian] Wirtz, doubters will be silenced if you use the wrong words. He’s an incredible talent. The French striker, superb talent. It’s a really good balanced team. You don’t have to worry over the club, things will improve.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally on the loss of Diogo Jota, whom he brought in in 2020, along with the consequences for the team. The Portugal international lost his life in a vehicle collision together with his sibling recently.
“How do you replace such an individual? This isn't just regarding his on-field talent, his personality mattered. I can’t imagine the squad missing him. I find it difficult to discuss on this topic. A profound tragedy for his teammates also. No one within the club would cite it to justify results though it's a fact. Entering the changing area where his spirit remains. Coping with it emotionally is challenging. Impossible.”
