Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police issued security footage Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
