California is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

Following 25 long years, no portion of California is experiencing dryness. This milestone arrives after difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated wildfire risks and pressured its huge agribusiness.

A Map Indicates Zero Drought

A recent update from the U.S. Drought Monitor confirmed that California in its entirety is without any level of drought. This development resulted from a period of above-normal rainfall that replenished key lakes like the state's largest lakes far beyond their historic averages.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons

The path to this point featured powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in 2023, leading to significant overflow, electrical failures, and fatalities. While those storms helped ease the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

As late as late December, pockets like Modoc County were deemed experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the beginning of January washed away those final dry conditions.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Remains a Concern

Yet, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions should not be confused with being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.

This mountain snow, which accounts for about a third of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for long-term water security. Water officials stress that it is not yet time to make predictions for the annual water supply.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Although the monitor indicates no dryness, the next challenge is to sustaining this precious water balance throughout the rest of the year.
